What to Prepare
Auditioners will sign up for a 30 minute timeslot and be asked to prepare one of the provided sides.
A reader (or audition scene partner) will be provided. Auditioners should select the side featuring a character that excites them, understanding that they will be in consideration for multiple roles in this production. There will be no singing at the initial audition.
- Actors auditioning for Scrooge may select any side in which Scrooge is featured.
- All youth actors should prepare the “youth side.” Please do not worry about memorizing every youth role in that side; youth actors will be assigned a group at the audition.
Special Skills
While not required, we would love to know of any instruments performers play.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS
Christmas Carol Character Information
GREAT is seeking 10-18 actors (ages 15+) and 8-10 young actors ages 8-14 to bring this new adaptation of a holiday classic to life at the Paramount Theatre. We are looking for a company of performers who are strong storytellers, thoughtful collaborators, and reliable community builders committed to collective growth.

A Note on Theatrical Intimacy
The definition of theatrical intimacy is any action on stage where the given circumstances of the scene or the overall production calls for physical touch for theatrical purposes, including kissing, embracing, levels of undress, and simulated sexual acts.
Because consent, safety, and clear communication are integral to GREAT’s production processes, information about intimacy expectations for any character who engages in physical contact, stylized movement, or heightened sexual circumstances will be shared in audition materials prior to auditions, and all moments of staged intimacy will follow specific protocols.
Casting/Character Breakdowns
A Note on Ensemble and Music: In this production, each performer will play multiple characters within the story of Christmas Carol, as well as additional singing as a Caroler. A Caroler will function kind of like an ensemble member and kind of like a member of a choir but will always have an important world-building role onstage. Our script features many classic carols that we are excited to bring to the stage in an accessible way. We will ask auditioners to sing in the callback, not in the initial audition.
A Note on Character Descriptions
The ages and gender identities below are the ages and gender identities of the characters. Actors who are outside of the character’s age ranges and/or gender identities will still be considered, based on the role preferences communicated on the actor’s audition form. Actors of all races, ethnicities, abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities, and backgrounds are strongly encouraged to audition for A Christmas Carol.

A Note on Production Content
Please be aware that A Christmas Carol contains subject matter that some may find activating and difficult including depictions of poverty, themes related to death, and encounters with ghosts.
Please note that most characters will engage in some level of staged intimacy: partner dance as well as physical moments to establish character relationships.
Planned moments of theatrical intimacy for each character are listed in the PRODUCTION CONSIDERATIONS document. Review the requirements of the roles carefully, and if you have any questions or concerns about the expectations or the process, please reach out to GREAT.
