July 15 & 16, 2025

BE PART OF THE STORY

Back for its seventh year, the Youth Artist Project provides an opportunity for youth performers to shine onstage! Open to volunteers ages 8-17, this all-youth cast—under the leadership of a team of high school artists—has the opportunity to share the delightful adventures of Elephant & Piggie’s We Are In A Play! Jr. with preschool and elementary-aged audiences. This production provides a wonderful opportunity for a first audition or onstage experience OR returning youth actor. The after school rehearsal period is convenient with a 4-6pm timeframe and tech is over by 7:00pm (so no super late nights!), and the joy of performing for full houses of student matinee audiences is a delightfully memorable experience!

CHARACTER LISTS

A Note On Theatrical Intimacy:

Theatrical intimacy is any action on stage where the given circumstances of the scene or the overall production calls for touch, both physical and imaginative.

GREAT has been learning from Intimacy Directors & Coordinators (IDC) to improve processes and incorporate safer practices for theatrical intimacy in our rehearsals.

All scenes with intimacy follow a specific set of staging and rehearsal protocols rooted in consent and safety for the actors.

For Elephant & Piggie’s We Are in a Play, actors can anticipate intimacy choreography that includes holding hands, hugs, shoulder touches, and linked arms. All choreography will be discussed and created in collaboration between the actors and creative team, always under the guidance of mentors.

Character List & Descriptions:

GERALD is a lumbering, somewhat formally attired elephant who loves nothing more than to have an adventure with his best friend, Piggie. Gerald can be a bit of a worrywort and prone to bouts of melancholy, but he tries to keep it together. Hugs, shoulder touches, linked arms.

PIGGIE is an ebullient, inquisitive pig who loves to spend time with her best friend, Gerald. She has a big personality and feels her feelings deeply. Hugs, shoulder touches, linked arms.

STAGE MANAGER is a take-charge character and a perfect role for someone who can tackle a big monologue.

ICE CREAM PENGUIN is a great supporting role for a performer who can portray this boisterous character who enjoys being larger than life and a little sarcastic. The Ice Cream Penguin must be ready to lead the song “Ice Cream Hero” with gusto.

PATRICIA PENGUIN is a sweet, caring, and unassuming penguin who is probably the youngest of the penguins onstage. She has a featured solo in “Ice Cream Hero.”

SHAKESPEARIAN PENGUIN is a hilarious cameo for a performer who can lean into a dramatic “Shakespearian” interpretation.

PAULETTE THE PELICAN is always ready with a joke! Paulette does not have a featured solo, so it’s okay if the actor would rather not sing onstage.

DELIVERY DOG is a dutiful, fur-loving character with a few great features in the show, including a solo line.

DON, DAN, DEE, and DRU DOG are on Delivery Dog’s team and all have small featured duets. Fun foursome!

SAMMI SQUIRRELLE is the ringleader of the Squirrelles. She is confident, friendly, and always ready to have a good time. Sammi sings solos, dances, and has quite a few lines.

SOPHIA SQUIRRELLE, SANTANA SQUIRRELLE, and SHAYNA SQUIRRELLE are the other Squirelles. Like Sammi, they love to party and make sure everyone is having fun. They all have solos.

BRIAN BAT is a featured character role for an actor with good comic timing. Brian does not sing a solo.

ENSEMBLE Includes Mice, additional Squirrelles, Young Penguins, Penguins, Dogs, Ice Cream Hero Choir, Onlookers  Party Guests, And Pigeon Stuffed Animal Puppeteer.
