Often called the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie knew that sometimes the best mysteries have no answer. In 1926, she found herself in a mystery that even she couldn’t untangle. Agatha Christie disappeared for 11 days. Already a household name, the story of Christie’s disappearance spread like wildfire – the entire world asking what could have happened to the Queen of the murder mystery herself.

The story goes that Christie and her husband had an argument one day with him intending to divorce her. That evening, Christie disappeared from their home without a sound or trace. In the morning, her car was found parked with nothing but an expired driver’s license and a few clothing items found inside. For 11 days, the world watched, searched, and wondered if this could be Christie’s best mystery yet. After an excessive 10 day manhunt, Christie was found at a hotel in Yorkshire, over 150 miles away from where her car was found, under the pseudonym of her husband’s mistress, and with absolutely no memory of what could have happened.

Many historians theorize what could have happened. Some say she willingly pulled the stunt to frame her husband for murder. Some call the incident a stress-induced psychotic break. Christie herself never spoke about this incident, even going as far as to omit it from her autobiography. Despite all of the sensationalized news, however, Christie was immediately granted a painless divorce with full custody of her daughter.

Perhaps it was, as doctors at the time diagnosed, “an unquestionable genuine loss of memory.” Or perhaps, Christie knew better than anyone that the best way to cast doubt on a person in power is to shroud them in mystery and scandal. Christie knew that when solving a mystery, it is not always about how the individual clues add up, but how the motive and the murderer meet.

In Murder on the Orient Express, we look to Christie again to see what she thinks of those with power above others. What happens when the societal elite ask for too much? How do people in power crumble when their wealth can’t compensate for their actions? What happens when regular people take that power into their own hands? Like with most Christie crimes, there is only one possible solution – will she reveal the truth this time or will she leave us with another mystery that keeps us asking – what could it have been?
